Although my group and i had mixed answers we concluded that it was best that parents and their involvement with school be strict and only be for student and teachers. In case parents get too involved with programs and could potentially ruin the child's learning in the program.
We talked about how culture affects the the child's development in school and it does take away the child's origin by schooling students to think a certain way than that of their culture's way. For example, coming from a Latino family where Spanish is prominently and having to learn English all throughout my childhood it did interfere with my learning of languages with Spanish too. Having to handle both English and Spanish and school really took a toll to where sometimes it is difficult to speak either language because of the language barrier. So I do believe affects a child's development in school.
Another part of the book mentioned how health affects a child's academic ability and I completely side with that idea because some students could have vision problems and are unable to see the front board and it can potentially influence their learning by not being able to right down the information on the board written by the teacher.
Our discussion director brought up valid questions where one of them was "what things do you think makes minorities and poor families come at a disadvantage in public schools?" where i answered that it deals with how the parents and students handle situations like these such as, a wealthy family having enough resources to have the student be an outstanding performance academically. Rather than that of the minority where they don't have enough enough resources to perform that well.
